Graeme Souness called Liverpool’s triumph over Chelsea”awful” while Jose Mourinho endorsed his previous club’s philosophy beneath Frank Lampard.
The thunderbolt and Roberto Firmino header, both sides of a disallowed Cesar Azpilicueta equaliser of trent Alexander-Arnold, saw the group leaders open a two-goal lead within 30 minutes at Stamford Bridge.
The brilliant solo effort of chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante set up a final 19 minutes but the Reds held on for a victory which has been their 15th Premier League win in a row and sets them five points clear of Manchester City.
Here is whether their early advantage over City has some significance and the way our Super Sunday pundits reacted to the success of Liverpool.
“They gained awful now and got away with it. They were different groups in the halves. In the first half, they were fantastic – really threatening. However, at the second half for the previous 30 minutes, they hung on. The midfield couldn’t keep hold of the ball and they had been under stress.
“For the goal, Fabinho appeared like he had been towing a caravan. The only explanation you may provide up is that they had a game . Chelsea will think that they must have got something from the game.”
“When you win games, you need to hang there. You wo analyse it when you get back on the bus. You move onto another match. There are instances to become self-critical but they would have took it if you told them before the game you’d win 2-1. Should they win the jackpot they will not look back at this result believing’we might have done better ‘ – they’ll just be pleased to have the medal in their hands, though it is only September.”
“It’s a significant outcome. Liverpool and manchester City will be considering the fixtures of each other since it’s an opportunity to fall points if they move away to big six teams. The two groups, if they get there or not, have to target 100 points. You may only drop 14 points. A draw isn’t a result that is good. To Arsenal, Manchester United, you would go away in the past and you would be happy with a point. City have changed that – pulling away from home isn’t a great result.”
And just what about Chelsea’s performance? Their manager was in the studio and he’s on board with Lampard and the doctrine of club, although he hopes that the fans don’t start accepting shedding.
“I hope that they don’t get accustomed to it [losing] – that’s the major thing. When you start accepting defeats because your staff play nicely along with your players gave it their best to be pleased, with regard to commitment and their application.
“I think when you get used to it, big clubs quit being big clubs. They need ton’t get used to it. It shows individuals are ready to accept what the year is going to be under a manager who’s one of the best professionals I worked with and also a supervisor that is potentially top and ready for the year.
“The reality of these numbers state Liverpool have been 10 points ahead of Chelsea – they aren’t going to struggle for the name. Let’s support the doctrine of giving time for the manager and those players to work together.
“I love their own ideas. I believe that their style of play has been adapted to what football is like nowadays and accommodated to the profile. Within this moment, they are far away from having the ability to compete for names ”
