India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked the authorities to intervene the elimination of shooting from the 2022 Commonwealth Games at Birmingham over.
India won seven gold medals in the sport in the 2018 Games.
But it has been excluded in the Games for the first time since 1970.
In an letter to Nicky Morgan, he wrote:”The public takes keen interest .”
His correspondence with the secretary of state Digital, Culture, Media and Sport also noticed that India makes up over half of 2.4 billion people of the 53-nation Commonwealth.
While he added that”the worldwide Mobility Federation [ISSF] has provided to discuss the price for inclusion of shooting in Birmingham.
“It seems the decision to exclude shooting relies on the premise that shooting had never been a compulsory sport and there is not any place available for shooting events.”
Shooting has been included in each Games apart from one since 1966 (Edinburgh from 1970), but isn’t among the event’s’core sports’.
This past year, shooting – combined with Para-table tennis, beach volleyball, cricket and archery – voiced its desire to become a part of these Games.
An evaluation panel comprised of representatives from authorities, as well as the organising committee and Commonwealth England of Birmingham 2022, has been setup to assess the case of each sport.
But in June, Birmingham 2022 declared that Para-table tennis, just beach volleyball and women’s cricket had been successful.
The move has proved contentious, with India threatening to boycott the event when the sport is not reinstated.
India topped the desk for shooting the 2018 Games in Australia, asserting 16 medals.
