Stokes was limited to 10.5 overs at Old Trafford last week after injuring his right shoulder in Australia’s first innings and will not bowl south London from Thursday because England look to make a 2-2 series draw.
Sam Curran has been hailed as a fourth largest seam-bowling option to cover, significance batsman Roy – who has scored only 110 runs from the show with an average of 13.75 – produces manner, whereas Chris Woakes has also been recalled instead of fellow paceman Craig Overton.
England captain Joe Root said:”It’s always difficult to leave men out but Stokesy picked up a shoulder injury in the previous game.
“He will not have the ability to bowl the overs you would normally expect him and I believe it could be a risk to take him to the match as a fourth seamer.
“He might be able to bowl a few overs here and there but his batting is, since this series has showna enormous part of this facet and he deserves to be from the team because a top-four batter.
“That we have needed to change the balance of the side along with Jason is the unfortunate one to miss out.
“Jason has had an opportunity to enter and play Test cricket and get a sense for this and it has not gone as he’d have liked, but I’m sure he will go away and work extremely hard and return again.
“That’s what you expect of men when they get made out. I am sure he will have that attitude. He will want to establish a point and get himself back.
“He’s very aware of where he’s at and what he wants to do to get himself in the ideal spot to perform in Test cricket”
Australia – that kept the Ashes on Sunday with a victory in Manchester – would create at least one alteration with all all-rounder Mitchell Marsh coming in for spinner Travis Head and batsman.
Peter Siddle was appointed in a 12-man squad, and will be hoping to split up the pace attack of Mitchell Starc Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
“The bowlers bowled a lot of overs [at Old Trafford] thus bringing in Mitchell will ease a whole lot of the workload onto these,” said Australia captain Tim Paine in his media conference.
“It was a difficult call on Travis, who has made a good start to his Test career, but we only need a little more bowling depth on what seems like a excellent wicket and to have the ability to look after out large fast bowlers.
“Mitchell also includes two Test hundreds so we have full faith in him with the bat”
Paine’s side lead the series 2-1 and will now be looking to win the Ashes series for the very first time in England as 2001, when Steve Waugh captained the Baggy Greens.
