British sailor Hannah Mills has launched an initiative to eradicate single-use plastic in game, following being”overwhelmed” by the”shocking” amount of waste she saw at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
With the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Welshwoman, 31, has launched using the Big Plastic Pledge.
Mills, who partnered Saskia Clark in London 2012 to golden at 2016 and silver, has asked athletes to make the pollution she saw Rio a thing before and to register up to the pledge.
“It struck meon a worldwide level, just how large a problem this is,” Mills explained.
“Wherever we travelled through the 2016 Olympic cycle – each marina, each shore, every time we went sailing – we’d find something in the water, but particularly in Rio.
“Every single time we launched our ships to the water, we’d literally descend through plastic pollution just to get out. It was shocking to find that place, then once you’ve discovered it, you can’t stop visiting it.
“Originally I had been overwhelmed. I thought:’What can I do?’ However, it awakened something inside me that drove me to do something about this.”
Since the Rio Games, Women and Mills’s 470 partner prior to the Welsh sailor turned into a sustainability ambassador with the IOC Eilidh McIntyre have looked at methods to lower their use of single-use plastic.
Together they have established a plastic master, asking athletes to commit from an inventory that includes using utensils, cups, lunchboxes and reusable bottles, along with metal straws.
“The objective is for other athletes to connect me on this shared vision of attempting to eliminate single-use plastic in game,” Mills added. “For me, this may work if we are one voice united on this issue.
“Competing at Tokyo 2020 and winning a gold medal there’s my number one focus, but alongside that I’m so passionate about this project and what we can achieve.”
Other pledges include considering what you can recycle not using single-use buying bags and being a portion of a beach clean-up.
It is not simply athletes who are being encouraged to sign up, but”the fans, the five-a-side football teams and school sports days, the fun runners as well as the vacation skiers and the Olympians”.
