Jason Roy: We are determined to level Ashes series and I know where I need to improve in Test cricket

In his latest Sky Sports column, Jason Roy discusses England’s Ashes disappointment, trying to improve along with the team’s determination to level the series at The Oval…
I am unashamedly, to be honest. I went to bed before day five Manchester knowing that I had a lot and wanting to do just that. I batted for one hour and a half, was feeling nice and starting to believe so it was unbelievably disappointing to escape out, we’d draw on the Test.
Was so incredible then for us to hold on. We have lost the opportunity however we revealed fight that was much on the last day and we still have a chance to draw on the sequence. That would be a plus to us given the position, if Australia quit having drawn the string, instead of won it.
We spoke after the match and there was a lot of emotion, people were very down, we have worked through the summer and to be in this situation, naturally we’re down.
The initial response was that we must flip it around and make certain they just leave with a draw, so that’s all that is on our heads, it is certainly what’s in my head. We wish to draw on the series. If we are able to do that, contrary to a great Australia negative, of winning the World Cup on the back, it might not be just what we needed but it is a good summer.
Batting in the middle-order I had more of a understanding of the way exactly I needed to really go about my innings. I had not done it in red-ball cricket, Intro I didn’t quite know the ideal mindset to get.
At No 4 I play, although to bat all day the plan was in the second innings and the amount of runs scored wasn’t significant and could be, it was just balls faced. I was at the first over.
I am the very first to humiliate myself and I know that I have got a great deal of work to perform. It is an optional coaching session today since I understand what I need to do in order to improve as a Test cricketer, but I’m going in and now I must work on these things.
It isn’t important whether you’re starting the batting or batting lower down the order, you have to be a great deal tighter.
I think I got outside at Old Trafford, particularly the one to balls that were good I got in second innings out of Pat Cummins. There has been a whole lot of talk about my bat being a very long way off from my pad however if the ball hadn’t have seamed as much as it did so it is immaterial in my foot is, it probably would have hit my bat.
I am only getting my head around exactly what I need to operate on, not being too hard while also being honest with myself. I have got a Excellent relationship with Graham Thorpe as a coach, and off the area as a friend.
He is in a position to be truthful with me and I am ready to tell the truth with him I’ll put some work that is fantastic and see where I end up. I’ve still got a lot of work to do although I was a bit more comfy at No 4.
In a series such as the Ashes you are playing. In Manchester, it was the time face seven or so overs and that I have needed to go in at the close of the afternoon.
I am proud of the way I have dealt with that situation and it is a case of having some runs. I can handle that strain and that environment, but I’ve got to set some scores on the plank because without that it counts for nothing.
No one is siphoned off by the simple fact that the team are incredible, players like Steve Smith and Cummins are at the top of the ranks for a reason. Folks may say’Jason Roy is useless’ but what about the bowlers I’m facing? I really don’t wish to get too downhearted because I know are as good as any you’ll face in Test cricket.
However, if you’re a batsman for England, poor is not good enough, then you need to be the best that you can be, the best around, that’s what we want. That’s why we have been so successful as a one time unit because be the finest in the world and everybody would like to better themselves, be pleased with just an OK series and no one would like to settle.
Rory Burns has been a fantastic example of that at the Test side. He has worked really hard and he’s stayed level for the time so far, nothing appears to faze him. For him to develop to a series like this and perform as well as he has, if a few of us aren’t doing and we ought to be doing, is quite gratifying to see, especially as he is someone I’ve known for a lot of decades.
Rory will want to go big in this match and prove a point. He deserves it and that I understand he’ll be working hard because of that.
I mentioned I needed a Spurs top in my final column and they have been ridiculously generous and shipped me ! I am now a fully-fledged Tottenham fan so that she was happy too, and the one was in her top this morning. It was a fairly cool surprise but I’ll wait to find a win and hopefully some runs at The Oval, and then I can request some snacks!
See day one of the fifth Test between England and Australia in 10am, Thursday on Sky Sports The Ashes.
