There are only certain days in this game when we see a race is won by a motorist and also brings pleasure across the whole paddock. Last Sunday at Monza was just one of these days.
I don’t think there was just one man on Sunday night that wasn’t pleased for Charles Leclerc – actually Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas along with Toto Wolff deep down appeared to be happy for your young Monegasque celebrity!
Qualifying was bizarre and amusing that is borderline. Each and every driver was chasing the slipstream, since it had been worth about half an instant. But what was puzzling was that when the business lineup that is second was crossed by Carlos Sainz, he had about 30 seconds to the flag. We understood that the last sector was about 26 seconds so that it became fairly clear that the remainder were going to miss that the flag. This was easy for us to see about the tv screen so quite how the teams with their software made it is outstanding.
Anyhow, Sunday delivered a Grand Prix that was really brilliant. Everything threw at it using two automobiles in the struggle against Charles Since it is put by Martin Brundle following the race, however he soaked up the pressure beautifully. It had been a classic college, edge of the chair Monza thriller using all the three demonstrating some quite driving.
Right from the opening lap, the Mercedes drivers along with Charles settled into a high-speed rail round the temple of pace. The stint is where it really came alive, while the first stint was about settling in and thinking about that was going to blink first. Together with the whole of Italy seeing them like hawks, delivered a pitstop mercedes chose their moment to deliver in Lewis Charles attacked on his in-lap and also the Ferrari mechanics.
The decision to run their individual tyres came back to Friday, the classes of those 2 automobiles and in general the design philosophy from Spa. The Mercedes has greater downforce which means that they can look after their tyres more. In addition, it means that they can put extra energy into the tyres from the pits and light them up faster than Ferrari. The simple fact that Ferrari were not as competitive on the mediums at Spa and on Friday at Monza and suffer more degradation because of the lower downforce guided them to set the tyre on Charles’ automobile.
That’s when the race came alive. Lewis on a pair of mediums that were warmed up for attacking, against Charles to a pair of challenging tyres that had to fully light up. It had been severely high-quality driving from the guys.
I thought Leclerc was especially smart in the Parabolica on every lap employing a line where he moved somewhat deep, flirted with the edge of the trail limitations, but opened up the steering wheel and straightened the depart to launch himself onto the start finish straight. He knew that when he broke a couple car lengths off at the beginning of the straight, then which Lewis would gain from, he’d be OK and played to his and the strengths of Ferrari.
Lewis got really close on one event into the second chicane of course, and that I thought it was right on the border of what had been an acceptable defence from Leclerc. I really like the idea of this black-and-white warning flag out of Michael Masi, the new race director to the season and also the stewards, and it was a great choice to not break up the struggle but just warn Charles he would not get away with this type of robust defence on a regular basis.
Mercedes played a game strategically by splitting their alternatives and getting Valtteri to proceed longer on the first stint. It was the world champion who made an error himself, after several laps of Lewis piling the pressure and Leclerc making one mistake into the chicane. It showed just how catchy it was to block the car in the end of the long in a bumpy braking zone and precisely how hard they were pushing. This error from Lewis allowed Bottas to pick up the baton and ramp up the pressure .
Once more Leclerc did not waste energy mirror-watching simply soaked up the strain, and kept his head down. The Mercedes was more planted through the Ascari chicane along with the Lesmos but the automobile’s caked rate was sufficient to keep him in front.
Being under the podium at Monza is brilliant. Seeing Mattia Binotto along with the team climb the weapon and soak up the adulation from the Tifosi showed how much this meant to each and every person in red on Sunday. As the boss of F1 team carrying the hopes of a nation, particularly in Monza, he has the task in Formula 1. Yes, across the season the Ferrari is not a fast-enough auto, and there is a good chance that they won’t win another race this year, but that makes Sunday’s victory all the more important to spend the heat off him to the short term at least.
The one person in a blouse feeling joyous though would be Sebastian Vettel. His spin at the Ascari chicane has been the most current in a run of mistakes that started back in Hockenheim this past year, but the way he rejoined the trail and left Lance Stroll with nowhere to move was a serious misjudgement that could have had much bigger consequences for both motorists. The simple fact that Stroll did more or less the same matter into the Toro Rosso stemmed. I am not making excuses for Lance but only saying I can understand it compared to the transfer of Vettel.
It’s difficult to believe that the European summer is over and we are all off to Singapore second for the flyaways. I fully expect Max Verstappen and Red Bull to be battling the Mercedes drivers around the streets of Singapore. Last year, Lewis delivered one of the greatest laps seen in Formula 1, and I am very excited to see whether he can be beaten by the Dutchman !
