Leonard Floyd is finally ready for a breakout season

Playing with Khalil Mack did not magically jumpstart Leonard Floyd’s statistical art, since the Chicago Bears edge rusher compiled a career-low four sacks last year.
The main issue for Floyd has been wellbeing. While he did not miss a game, he dealt with a hand injury that silenced his creation. Once healthy, the former first-round pick flashed the capability to make the most of one third blockers. The aim heading into 2019 would be for Floyd to finally be a more consistent force off the edge.

New outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino believes Floyd”can be unique” because he works on greater counters to flip pressures into sacks.
“As he gets better at a Couple of things, his numbers will go up,” Monachino said, via the Chicago Tribune.” (What) could happen first are the effective rushes, right? He may affect the quarterback. He can affect the launch point. A man might move . But the more of the ones that come together, the more productive rushes he is going to have. The more he’s going to get home and complete. Right now we’re focused on just a couple of things with Leonard. And it is not because he can not handle more. It is because we want to construct his arsenal in a way that,’This is my go-to, and this is the counter off of it.'”
Floyd believes he is making strides after two straight seasons with fewer than five sacks. He created only 35 pressures last year, per Pro Football Focus, ranking 47th among advantage defenders. Floyd believes those amounts can skyrocket now that he eventually has a complete, healthy offseason to work on his technique.
“Being violent and only heading out with a mindset of getting to the quarterback,” Floyd said. “I must sharpen my tools. It has been quite different because I have been in a position to train and perform each of the things with no constraints this spring.
“I think I was playing my best football during the second half of the year after I really got over my hands injury. I felt as though I was playing a lot better and I’m excited about this year and only building off of that.”
The game film disagrees with Floyd, as he flashed down the stretch last season, including a postseason sack. Now the Bears need their former first-round pick to eventually break out and disrupt the QB for an whole calendar year.
“If you place him in a phone booth against a big offensive tackle, yes, power and strength is a issue,” Monachino said. “But his length and his explosiveness in a short distance, they negate all that other drawback. As a power rusher at the top of the pocket, so I do not think he’s going to have any issue. There are a few things I believe in coaching pass rushers. Pass rush is all about effort and violence. That’s what it’s about. It is about how we finish on top of the pocket. Because guys do not run across other players in this league. Players are too good. So we have got to get him very good at how exactly is he going to clear? And how is he going to finish?”
If Floyd becomes a force contrary Mack, the Bears will be a menace to QBs. This offseason, Chicago picked up Floyd’s fifth-year option for 2020, values $13.22 million. They’ll gladly pay that cost if the border rusher breaks out in 2019.
