Champion Golfer of the Year Shane Lowry has become the latest player to join the Most exclusive group of Honorary Life Members in the European Union.
Lowry was introduced in July, his maiden major title, where ignored Tommy Fleetwood on the last day to storm to a six-stroke success.
Even the five-time European Tour champions would be the 56th participant to take up Honorary Life Membership since the system has been released in 1978, following on from Patrick Reed this year being awarded the same status.
“It is pretty cool to get this award,” Lowry said. “When you start playing golf when you are a child you don’t know how great you can be, or even once you begin playing as a specialist. I didn’t know I would get to this afternoon, so it’s quite cool.
“I have always joined a nice list of titles, which is fairly great also. My heart lies with The European Tour. I will always be a part. I love coming back and I love playing in events in this way, therefore it’s an extreme privilege to get this”
Lowry breakthrough in Royal Portrush is one of just two successes on the Tour in 2019, using all the Irishman winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January.
The award was received by the 32-year-old from European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the season’s Rolex Series event.
“Shane’s incredible success at Royal Portrush is going to be remembered among the iconic performances from the Championship’s storied history,” Pelley said.
“Shane is a terrific personality and I think you once you look at the outstanding reception he enjoyed across the island of Ireland in the week after his win, along with the warmth and cheer on social media globally, that shows you just how popular he is in the game. He is also a superb ambassador for the European Tour, and it is hence a really worthy recipient of this honour.”
