Europe won the last 3 singles matches to secure a 141/2-131/2 Solheim Cup victory over the United States.
Bronte Law, that moments before won her game to the 17th, sprinted up the fairway to join the celebrations after wildcard pick Suzann Pettersen holed an eight-foot putt to win the trophy.
“She got a bit of stick for getting this choice, but it shows she was the perfect one,” said Europe captain Catriona Matthew.
After taking the time out of this match in November 2017 to have a 22,, Pettersen was selected. But after returning to play this season, Matthew gave the 39-year-old a surprise 10th Solheim Cup appearance.
And her captain’s faith was paid by her on the final green with a victory that was nerve-shredding.
American Marina Alex overlooked a putt to halve her match to make a point that could have observed the trophy is retained by the US.
Even though Pettersen sized up what she believed is a putt to win her game Law was sealing that stage back on the 17th.
That unexpectedly meant a Pettersen birdie would seal the triumph, while a miss could have seen the US keep the cup and hit 14 points but the Norwegian held her nerve to spark wild parties around the green.
Pettersen later admitted she didn’t know her putt was to win the trophy.
“It truly was a huge blur,” she said. “I didn’t understand. I was just attempting to earn a birdie.”
