Kyler Murray had a really rough go in his next preseason game as a master, departing the match down 26–finishing the night with negative yardage. Murray was not great — but had been everything as bad as it appeared, or is there some reason for hope?
Kyler Murray had a rough Thursday night, and also the world wide web is freaking out. It all started out so well last week. Murray played only 1 set in his first game as a pro, completing his first six passes and leading his Arizona Cardinals into the edge of scoring position prior to departing.
Murray had a considerably worse outing Thursday against the Oakland Raiders. He performed much of the first halfand by the time he left, Murray and the Cards trailed the Raiders 26 to zip.
And the world wide web, obviously, melted.
Let us begin with the damage. There’s a lot of it.
Murray played four drives against the Raiders. Those drives acquired -10, and 13, -6, -10 yards. Altogether, Murray played with most of the first half, leaving the game almost exactly halfway through the second quarter. The Cardinals had only 8 minutes and 21 minutes of possession in four possessions. In 15 plays that were offensive, they blended to lose 13 yards.
Murray ran for 3 yards, a designed run on his very first play from scrimmage. He finished only 3 of 8 passes for just 12 meters, a measly 1.5 yards a week. Murray had a 45.8 quarterback rate for the day. He had three penalties himself a delay of match and two false starts — and was sacked twice. One of these was his final drama of the afternoon, an 11-yard sack in the end zone for a safety that finished his night. After he left the game, the Cardinals were trailing 26–0.

Calling Murray’s results ugly is the insult to the term awful. However, was it all as bad as it looked?
Let’s dig a little deeper into the conditions. There’s some good and some really bad. The poor? Murray played all his time with David Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald on the area, therefore it’s not like he didn’t have any talent . DJ and also Fitz shared three targets. They caught one of them lost three yards. Welp. Johnson rushed four times for six yards. Lots of single digits.
The Cardinals had only one first down in Murray’s time on the field. It came from a defensive penalty, illegal hands to the face. Recall how Murray left the match down 26–0? On another play the Cards ran, copy QB Brett Hundley threw a touchdown. Arizona outscored Oakland 26–7 with no Murray.
However there was really a bit maybe not in Murray’s favor also. The run game couldn’t get anything going, along with the offensive line put in a miserable performance. Oakland blitzed Murray early and often, hoping to force the newcomer into rapid conclusions, and he was throwing off his back all game.
The four drives of arizona began on 10-yard line, 25, 24, and the 10. He faced a 3rd and 11, 3rd and 12, both 3rd and 13, both 3rd and 17, as well as 3rd and 25 on different drives. That is a whole lot of dreadful field places and disadvantageous situations for any outsider to be in, let alone one as green as Murray. The one time Murray faced a 3rd and short, David Johnson ripped off a huge run to get a first down… and got called back on a holding penalty. The Cardinals simply couldn’t catch any rhythm.
The reality is that almost any cop could have struggled in Murray’s area. The Arizona offensive line was dreadful, and Murray had a man or 2 in his face within minutes after the snap pretty much every play. He performed every snap with his back against his own goal line and had almost zero plays in a spot where the crime had an advantage. He didn’t play nicely however, quarterbacks would have.
Murray’s game wasn’t an indictment on his height or his arm, nor his conclusions, nor his long run. If anything, it may have been an indictment of Kliff Kingsbury’s crime — although that fights to maintain up if the Cardinals scored 26 points after Murray left. Possibly the Raiders defense is simply that great. Perhaps it was only four poor forces.
More likely than anything else is that Kingsbury is likely keeping things fairly vanilla from the preseason. Why roll out your best plays when the games do not matter and give your winning script? There’s no reason to run Murray and place him in danger with nothing at stake.
Murray was not good Thursday night but that he wasn’t bad either. He simply never had much of a chance to start with. It is much too soon to draw some conclusions.
Murray remains the significant Rookie of the Year favorite, +165 in Bovada. The Cardinals will be +600 to create the match, or +10000 to win the Super Bowl, if you’re feeling lucky. If you’re a bit more bearish on Arizona’s opportunities, they’re +750 to finish with the worst record in the NFL. Happy gambling.
